Building Skills, Understanding, and Confidence in Math

Math is about more than finding the right answer. Strong math learning helps students build number sense, understand how and why math works, develop fluency, solve problems, and apply their thinking in new situations.

At PEARL, families can choose from a variety of math curricula with different approaches, levels of rigor, formats, and amounts of parent involvement. The goal is not to find one “best” math curriculum, but to find the right fit for your student and family.

As you explore your options, consider your student’s current skills, learning style, need for support or challenge, and the type of instruction that works best in your home. Your PEARL teacher can help you compare options, use placement tools when appropriate, and build a math plan that supports continued growth.

Core Components to Consider

Number Sense & Conceptual Understanding

Students develop an understanding of numbers, quantities, patterns, and relationships—and learn the why behind mathematical ideas.

Computation & Fluency

Students build efficient and accurate strategies for working with numbers, including increasingly fluent recall of important math facts.

Problem Solving

Students learn to make sense of problems, choose strategies, work through challenges, and determine whether their answers are reasonable.

Mathematical Reasoning

Students learn to explain their thinking, recognize patterns and relationships, compare strategies, and support their mathematical conclusions.

Visual & Hands-On Learning

Models, manipulatives, drawings, number lines, and other representations help students connect abstract mathematical ideas to something they can see and understand.

Application & Connection

Students strengthen math understanding by applying it in different contexts—from measurement, money, and data to everyday situations and new types of problems.

  • No. Guests only receive notifications for posts sent directly to the Community Group they belong to. They will not receive district-wide, school-wide or class posts unless their specific Community Group is also selected as a recipient. 

  • Yes. On the web, from Home, click Groups under Participate in the left sidebar. Locate the Community Group and click Leave.
