Alternative Learning Experience

PEARL is a public school that operates under Washington State Law governing Alternative Learning Experiences (ALE). What distinguishes our program from the typical brick and mortar school is that we are not housed on a campus. Instead, we serve students from all over Washington State. 

For all ALE students there are four state requirements that will be overseen by their PEARL teacher. 

Student Learning Plan

A Student Learning Plan (SLP) acts as a guide for student, parent and teacher as to the learning that will take place over the course of the academic school year. It will include a timeline that indicates what lessons are to be covered each month from the chosen curriculum. The SLP is created in collaboration with your PEARL teahcer and then managed by the teacher throughout the year. 

Weekly Contact

Each week students are required to be in two way contact with their PEARL teacher. This means that the student shares about their learning in their own words and their PEARL teacher responds. This is done through submitting work samples from lessons comleted that week on our Seesaw platform, via Zoom or by phone. If your PEARL teacher lives in your area, you can also request to meet in person if they are available for that. 

Weekly contact is how attendance is tracked in an ALE. PEARL must adhere to the same attendance requirements as any other public school in Washington State.

Monthly Reviews

On a monthly basis your PEARL teacher will complete a monthly review of student learning. This is done using weekly contact over the previous month as well as other wonderful details shared by parents through a parent provided monthly report. The montly review will be posted for parents and students to read together. 

Assessment

All PEARL students take part in district reading and math testing twice a year. All materials and instructions are provided by PEARL and parents proctore the assessments. 

All full time students in grades 3-8 also agree to annual state testing. There is no cost for these assessments and testing locations will be provided in your area. Leading up to state testing families of full time students will be expected to take the testing seriously, be prepared to spend 2-3 days taking the assessments and be required to participate in test prep.
